Ethiopia invites bids for two utility-scale solar projects
The Ethiopian government is inviting bids for the construction of two utility-scale solar PV projects, Gad II (125 MW) and Weranso (100 MW), under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) framework. While historically reliant on hydropower, Ethiopia aims to diversify its energy mix by pursuing all renewable energy sources. |
The application period runs until April 12th, 2025. It is open to international bidders and applications must be delivered to the office of the Public-Private Partnership Directorate General (PPP DG).
This initiative is part of Ethiopia's ambitious plan to more than double its installed electricity generation capacity to 13,000 MW within the next three years.
Our take: Ethiopia has abundant solar energy potential that it could utilise to connect millions of people… Read more (2 min)
The Government of Liberia has tendered the services of consultants to develop and implement the country's first solar and battery storage auction. The utility-scale project will feature 70 MWp of solar PV plants and 20 MW/60 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Buchanan and Yekepa. |
The consultants will be responsible for developing the legal, technical, commercial, and financial framework governing the solar PV and BESS tender, culminating in selecting one or more independent power producers (IPPs) to finance, build, and operate the plants.
The World Bank will provide consultancy funding through grant financing under the Liberia Electricity Sector Strengthening and Access Project, in which $64.2 million will be lent to the Liberian government, with additional funds available if necessary. The deadline for submitting written expressions of interest is 25 February 2025.

TDB Group, an African investment platform, and Anzana Electric Group, an energy company, have announced the financial close of two hydropower projects in Burundi. The 10.65 MW projects cost approximately $35 million and are expected to boost the country's electricity generation capacity by over 10%. |
The funding will support the construction of the 1.65 MW Upper Ruvyironza project and the 9 MW Upper Mulembwe project. They will start supplying electricity to the national grid in 2025 and 2027 respectively.
The projects will be developed by Songa Energy, a portfolio company of Anzana Electric Group and one of the first Independent Power Producers in Burundi. Once completed, it is expected to connect over 100,000 Burundian households and create up to 500 jobs during construction.
Our take: With most African governments struggling with debt, the private sector can help in providing much-needed capital… Read more (2 min)
