Zimbabwe sees grid exodus of top customers to off-grid solar
Zimbabwe's private sector is switching to self-power generation, focusing on renewable energy. Currently, there are 29 ongoing projects with a total capacity of 1,688 MW. Solar PV is the dominant choice, with 25 projects contributing 403 MW. Coal has only three power projects, but accounts for the largest capacity at 1,265 MW. |
The trend of self-generating power is growing across Africa, especially among large energy consumers like mining companies. There's a significant shift in South Africa, DR Congo, Zambia, and even in countries without substantial mining activities like Kenya and Nigeria.
While Zimbabwe has installed approximately 1,250 MW of renewable energy, the majority of this comes from hydropower. Solar energy accounts for only 70 MW, but its growth rate has been significantly faster, increasing sixfold compared to its capacity five years ago.
Our take: Global market demand for sustainably produced products is growing, and those companies that adhere stand to benefit. Those using polluting fuels will have to pay more to access the market… Read more (2 min)
The Renewables Rising Staff Index increased by 5.7% in April compared to March as the sector continues its expansion. Generally, the number of advertised jobs increased by 14%. Despite these new jobs, the overall total staff number remained unchanged at 1,554 for the ten companies analysed. Jinko Solar retained the top spot. |
At least five projects reached financial closure in the last month. Most of these companies, such as Scatec and Juwi, rolled out several advertisements to fill the open roles, though most are still open, and the hiring process is ongoing. We tracked over 189 roles across different companies.
Scatec moved up in the ranking from third to second. The company hired five more staff in the last month.
Our take: The sector is expected to keep hiring in the coming months as more funding is channelled for electrification efforts… Read more (2 min)
After a period of stagnation, geothermal hiring is on the rise again, with managerial positions leading the charge in our Renewable Rising job board this week. East Africa's vast 20,000 MW geothermal capacity offers immense renewable energy potential. Is this the turning point for geothermal development in the region? |
Many of the roles are based in major cities. However, positions like Area Business Managers and Cluster Officers in smaller towns (e.g., Mbarara, Kiboga, Nanyuki, Eldoret) indicate growing rural market penetration.
While geothermal takes off, solar is dominating hiring in Africa. This is evidenced by the prevalence of companies like Sun King, SunCulture, Scatec Solar, and Juwi leading the rapid expansion of the solar energy sector.
